Puppy Shots Schedule: Holistic vs. Conventional Approach


Veterinarians may choose to place your puppy a conventional or holistic vaccination schedule, following specific guidelines designed to preserve the long-term health of your dog.

Conventional Approach

According to the American Kennel Club, there is an accepted schedule for puppy shots. These guidelines list recommended and optional shots according to the dog’s age.

Holistic Approach

Not all veterinarians agree on these general guidelines and instead opt to administer puppy vaccinations on a different schedule to prevent them from developing any vaccine-induced illnesses. Some of the guidelines holistic veterinarians may follow include:
  • Before 22 Weeks: No vaccinations
  • After 22 Weeks: Distemper
  • Week 24: Distemper
  • Week 26: Parvovirus
  • Week 28: Parvovirus
  • Week 30: Rabies
  • Annual booster shots are not recommended unless the animal’s health deems it necessary
